How to Clean an Oven for Your Bond Inspection

Why the oven matters
Baked-on grease and carbon are immediately obvious during inspections. The oven is a standard item on exit inspections — the door gets opened, the racks pulled out and the inside checked. If there is a sticky brown film on the glass or thick crust on the base tray, it is an instant failure.
In Perth's warm climate, grease drippings from roasts and baking can quickly harden into hard carbon, which releases smoke and odours every time the appliance is turned on. Returning the oven to a near-new state is crucial if you want your full security deposit refunded without arguments.
Step-by-step professional oven restoration method
To achieve an immaculate, streak-free look that will impress even the strictest real estate agent, follow this methodical workflow:
- Remove and soak oven racks. Take out all wire racks, side runners and baking trays. Submerge them in a bathtub filled with boiling water and two scoops of laundry powder or dishwashing tablets. Let them sit for at least 4 to 6 hours to soften the blackened, burnt-on crust before light scrubbing.
- Apply cleaner or baking soda paste. To avoid harsh chemical fumes, mix a thick paste using half a cup of baking soda and water. Paint it over all internal surfaces, focusing on greasy corners, and avoid the heating elements entirely. Leave it overnight.
- Scrub and wipe residue. The next morning, wipe out the dried paste with a damp cloth. For tough spots, spray a little white vinegar to activate a foaming reaction that lifts the remaining grime, then use a non-scratch scouring pad to bring the enamel back to a shine.
- Clean the door glass and seals. Brown stains on the glass usually come off with a glass scraper or the paste mixture. Never use coarse steel wool on glass — it leaves tiny scratches that lead to cracking later. Wipe rubber door gaskets gently with mild soapy water and never pull on them.
- Finish the external facing and knobs. Pull off the plastic control knobs if they are removable to clean oil splashes underneath, then polish the exterior stainless steel or enamel with a clean microfibre cloth to remove greasy fingerprints.
